Have you ever noticed that stress seems to settle in the same places in your body? Maybe your shoulders tighten during busy weeks. Maybe your jaw clenches when you’re overwhelmed (stuck in 610 West Loop gridlock!) Or perhaps your lower back aches when life feels shaky/uncertain. These recurring physical responses are often called primary tension patterns, and they’re different for everyone.
Understanding these patterns is one of the core foundations of bodywork therapy and somatic healing: understanding why your body holds tension in the first place!
Primary tension patterns are the habitual ways your body responds to intense and not-so-intense stress/emotions. Instead of stress appearing randomly, your body tends to default to familiar holding patterns over time.
For example, prolonged stress can cause the body to brace itself unconsciously. Many people develop tension in the shoulders, neck, or jaw (TMJ massage, anyone?), while others may restrict their breathing or tighten their hips. These patterns form when the body instinctively protects itself during stressful or emotional experiences - it’s a self-preservation response that doesn’t help your body do itself any good in today’s stressful world.
Bodywork therapy, rather than focusing only on where tension hurts. Somatic massage and bodywork look at how these patterns formed and how they continue to affect your nervous system, because your body remembers!
No two people carry stress the same way. Your primary tension patterns are shaped by your posture, daily habits, past injuries, emotional experiences, and overall nervous system health. These patterns develop gradually. Over time, your nervous system begins to treat tension as the “normal” state, making it harder to relax even when stress passes.
While everyone is unique, many people fall into familiar patterns. Some people become shoulder holders, where stress gathers in the upper body; others develop jaw-clenching patterns, often leading to TMJ discomfort and facial tension. There are also shallow breathers, where stress keeps breathing high in the chest, and lower back protectors, where the body braces against stress, creating persistent tightness. It’s also not uncommon to over-achieve and have all of the above!
Know this: these patterns aren’t flaws, so don’t blame yourself! They’re protective responses your body learned over time. But when they become chronic, they can leave you feeling tired and disconnected from your body.

Somatic-focused bodywork therapy takes a different approach. Instead of forcing muscles to relax, it helps the nervous system recognize safety again. Through gentle body awareness, slow intentional movement, and supportive touch, the body begins to release patterns that no longer serve it. Sessions move gradually, allowing the nervous system to reset naturally rather than being pushed or forced.
After a session, clients often notice subtle but meaningful changes. A few examples are: breathing deepens, shoulders soften, and tension begins to fade without effort. Many people also report feeling calmer, more grounded, and more connected to their bodies after just one session, too.
At Elevation Massage & Spa, each session is tailored to your individual tension patterns and nervous system needs. No two people carry stress the same way, and your treatment reflects that. This holistic approach helps address the root of tension rather than just the symptoms.
Because once your body learns it doesn’t need to hold onto stress anymore, everything begins to shift for the better!
